TATU
What is TATU?
Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) is a mentoring program of the American Lung Association. This tobacco education program trains teens in grades 7 – 12 to develop strong leadership skills through mentoring, educating, and influencing 4th – 6th grade students. Training teens and giving them the opportunity to teach are the keys to TATU’s success. This program provides new and relevant information to teens about tobacco and provides teens with the skills to convey that information to younger children and the community through leadership, peer counseling, mentoring, and service hours.
TATU’s main goal is to help teens to stay tobacco-free. Through this program, teens can: 1) develop skills to teach younger children about tobacco use and become advocates for a tobacco-free community, 2) understand and identify the positive aspects of being tobacco-free and realize that the majority of teens and adults do not smoke, 3) understand how tobacco industry advertising and promotions deceive youth, 4) understand how getting hooked on tobacco destroys youths’ freedom and control over their personal lives, and 5) develop self-confidence.
How does TATU work?
1. High schools or other community organizations show interest in TATU program and coordinator makes TATU available for free
2. Teens are recruited as part of an existing club, high school class, after school program, or other youth group that works best for the school or faith-based organization
3. TATU contact comes to the campus or location in the area for a scheduled teen training (there must be at least 10 teens minimum for a team but there is not a maximum number)
4. Teens attend a TATU training workshop (on-site for 6 hours; can be all at one time or broken into smaller segments) and receive a free t-shirt and other cool stuff
5. Teens prepare and practice presentations for 4th – 6th grade students (teens will learn how to do a presentation at the workshop and can meet during an activity or club hour or as a TATU team, high school class, after school program, school council, or other youth group)
6. TATU sponsor coordinates mentoring activities with 4th – 6th grade classrooms Teens teach 4th – 6th graders using information they have learned in the TATU training workshop along with their student manual and give free incentives such as pencils and tattoo stickers to the children
